A good face moisturizer is the one product dermatologists recommend for almost everyone. This page lists every face moisturizer in our daily price check, grouped by price, with advice from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). We have not tested these products; we track their prices.
Match texture to skin type
The AAD explains that gels feel lightest, creams hold more moisture than lotions, and ointments are the most effective for dry skin. People with dry skin should start with a cream; people with oily skin may prefer a light gel.
Ingredients to look for and skip
AAD dermatologists suggest ceramides and hyaluronic acid for hydration, and avoiding fragrance, alcohol and alpha-hydroxy acids if your skin is dry or easily irritated.
Apply to damp skin
The AAD says moisturizer works better applied right after washing, while skin is still damp, because it traps water in the skin. For daytime, a moisturizer with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher saves a step.
